“Portraits of Philip V and María Luisa Gabriela of Savoy”
Pair of oils on canvas. Relined.
81.5 x 62.5 cm each.
Important pair of court portraits depicting King Philip V of Spain (1683–1746) and his first wife, Queen María Luisa Gabriela of Savoy (1688–1714), figures of fundamental importance in the establishment of the Bourbon dynasty following the War of the Spanish Succession. Executed within the Peruvian viceregal sphere during the 18th century, both portraits constitute a remarkable example of the dissemination of royal imagery throughout the American territories of the Spanish Crown.
The compositions clearly derive from European courtly models circulated through engravings and official portraits sent from Madrid, here reinterpreted through the distinctive language of Andean viceregal painting. The representation of Philip V stands out for the theatrical elegance of his military attire and for the characteristic powdered wig of French inspiration, emblematic of the new aesthetic introduced by the House of Bourbon. Queen María Luisa Gabriela is portrayed with exquisite delicacy, holding flowers and a fan, attributes associated with aristocratic femininity and courtly refinement.
Particularly noteworthy is the ornamental treatment of the textiles, especially visible in the Queen’s portrait, where the decorative richness of lace, embroidery, and floral motifs reveals the chromatic sensitivity and meticulous taste characteristic of Peruvian viceregal workshops. The paintings likewise demonstrate the Andean preference for luminous surfaces, intense colors, and a certain linear stylization of the figures, all hallmarks of 18th-century South American colonial portraiture.
The pair also possesses considerable historical and symbolic significance. The dissemination of images of Philip V and the new Bourbon dynasty throughout the Americas responded to a clear political intention of monarchical affirmation following the dynastic transition that took place at the beginning of the 18th century. These portraits not only represented the sovereigns, but also functioned as authentic symbols of royal presence and authority within the overseas territories of the Spanish Empire.
Especially significant is the viceregal reinterpretation of European models, in which courtly solemnity is combined with a local decorative sensibility that grants the works a distinctive personality. The delicate hieratic quality of the figures, the visual richness of the costumes, and the chromatic intensity of the ensemble place these paintings within the finest tradition of viceregal portraiture in colonial Peru.
By virtue of their quality, state of preservation, and compelling historical value, this pair constitutes a magnificent testimony to the circulation of European dynastic models within the artistic sphere of the Americas and to the extraordinary cultural richness developed in the viceregal workshops of the 18th century.
