Hugo 3.42 x 4.76 in. 8.7 x 12.1 cm Provenance: Alfred Busquet, French poet and journalist (1820 - 1883), close friend of Victor Hugo, then by descent; Anonymous sale; Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Art Valorem, 22 November 2019, no. 98 ; Acquired at this sale by the current owner; Private collection, Ile-de-France Alfred Busquet was a poet and journalist, and a friend of Victor Hugo. He visited Victor Hugo during his exile in Guernsey, and wrote an account of it, never published but whose manuscript is kept at the Bibliothèque Nationale: Voyage aux îles anglaises et chez Victor Hugo (NAF 26494). Victor Hugo remained in exile in Guernsey from 1856 to 1870, until the fall of Napoleon the Lesser. Alfred Busquet published a volume of poetry in 1854, Le poème des heures. He later became a publisher, taking over the management of Editions Pagnerre in 1867. We would like to thank Pierre Georgel for kindly confirming the authenticity of this drawing based on a photograph. It will be included in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné of drawings.
