The second painting by Victor Wolfvoet the Younger in this auction goes back to a depiction by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), his teacher, from around 1615-17, which hung in Brussels City Hall until it was destroyed in the French bombardment of 1695. A large-format second version of this composition on canvas by Peter Paul Rubens is kept in the Royal Gallery in Copenhagen (inv. no. KMSsp185, c. 1618-1620, oil on canvas, 233 × 300 cm).
We would like to thank Dr Bert Schepers for confirming the authenticity of the painting on the basis of a photograph and for his scientific support.
