Jean-Baptiste Franceschini-Pietri (1834 - 1915), from a family of Corsican notables, became private secretary to Emperor Napoleon III from 1860 until the fall of the Second Empire in 1870. A man of trust, he remained loyal to the imperial family in exile and continued to act as adviser and representative of Napoleon Eugène, the Prince Imperial, and later of the Empress Eugénie. In 1860, the Empress Eugenie took on the honorary title of Countess of Pierrefonds, a testimony to her attachment to Pierrefonds Castle, restored by Eugène Viollet-Leduc at the Emperor's request. This fanciful and discreet title enabled her to exchange "incognito" with certain people, particularly in the context of business relations. Jean-Michel Le Soufaché (1804-1887) was a pupil of architects François Debret and Félix Duban. He graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1830. He worked under the direction of Frédéric Nepveu on the refurbishment of the Château de Versailles, then with Félix Duban on the extension of the École des Beaux-Arts and the restoration of the Château de Dampierre. He subsequently designed private mansions for the aristocracy and bourgeoisie, including the Montesquiou-Fézensac mansion and the Alfred Sommier mansion. From 1856 to 1862, he supervised the construction and interior fittings of the Château de Sceaux for the Duke of Treviso, and was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1862.
