The Austrian painter and graphic artist Victor Eckhardt von Eckhardsburg's preferred themes were animals, landscapes, and militaria, which he implemented in an impressionistic painting style influenced by Heinrich von Zügel. Eckhardt von Eckhardsburg came from an old family of officers; his father was a major and his brother was a major general in the k.u.k.. Army (Imperial and Royal Army). In 1880/1881, Eckhardt von Eckhardsburg studied painting at the Prague Art Academy, then until 1884 at the Vienna Academy with Christian Griepenkerl and August Eisenmenger. From 1885 to 1890, he continued his studies at the Munich Art Academy, with Nikolaus Gysis and 1894/1895 in Karlsruhe and Woerth/Rhine with Leopold von Kalckreuth and Heinrich von Zügel. He was a member of Deutsch-Böhmischer Künstlerbund (German-Bohemian artists' association) in Prague and the Künstlerbund Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe artists' association; with Gustav Bamberger). In 1900, Eckhardt von Eckhardsburg exhibited for the first time as a guest in the Hagenbund, and he was a member from 1902 to 1922. He had been a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus since 1923. Eckhardt von Eckhardsburg lived in Prague until 1903 and in Perchtoldsdorf from 1904. During World War I, he served as a war painter on the Volhynian front. In the 1930s, he worked as an illustrator for the "Österreichische Soldatenblatt"(Austrian soldiers' gazette). In 1991, a memorial exhibition took place in Perchtoldsdorf Castle, and in 1996 a collective exhibition took place in the Anton Hanak Museum in Langenzersdorf. Eckhardt von Eckhardsburg's works is included in the collections of the Belvedere, the Wien Museum (Vienna), the Museum Niederösterreich (Museum of Lower Austria), and the Rudolfinum, Prague. Honours, prizes (selection): 1900 Eger Medal of Honour; 1935 Lower Austrian State Art Prize; 1937 Austrian State Prize Medal; 1944 Golden Laurel from the Vienna Künstlerhaus.
