VILLANOVAN KANTHAROS WITH GEOMETRIC INCISED DECORATION
Ca. 700 BC.
A ceramic kantharos, a deep vessel with distinctive high openwork twisted handles, meant for consuming wine. This example has a protruding border between the body and foot, a thin rim with a smooth lip, and a small circular foot. The exterior of the vessel is decorated with a meander geometric motif. The body is made of impasto, a coarse earthenware that is a precursor to Etruscan bucchero.
