Lot no. 61
VILLANOVAN KYATHOS WITH GEOMETRIC INCISED DECORATION Ca. 800-700 BC. A kyathos, a single-handled dipper with an interestingly shaped conical foot. This is a very early example of a vessel shape that would later become highly refined by the Etruscans and then the Greeks. The handle, which in later versions towered high above the body of the vessel, is small and looped, adorned with three protruding knots. The external surface of the walls of the vessel is embellished with incised geometric motifs flanking the three protruding knots. The body is made of impasto, a coarse earthenware that is a precursor to Etruscan bucchero. For similar see: La Collezione D'ascenzi, n. 5, p. 9; n. 14, p. 15 Size: 95mm x 170mm; Weight: 440g. Provenance: Property of a London gallery; acquired on the German art market. Accompanied by German export license.
