In the small panel, light plays a leading role: its reflections flicker on the water, animating the surface with natural, changing vibrations. The facades of the buildings overlooking the canal catch the light gracefully and stand out against the shadier background, in a subtle balance between light and shadow. Originally from Verona, but Florentine by adoption, Vincenzo Cabianca was able to keep alive the link with the Venetian painting tradition, heir to a refined chromatic sensitivity and that natural harmony that became a distinctive feature of his art. A veteran among the Macchiaioli, he participated with conviction in the battle against academic conventions, pursuing a free, immediate painting style based on direct observation of reality. Always attentive to the truthfulness of the subject, Cabianca devoted great care to the study of light, investigating the effects with a sober but vibrant palette: grey tones traversed by sudden flashes of white and colouristic flashes that infuse vitality.
