Lot no. 26
VINCENZO SPISANELLI
(Orta San Giulio, Novara, 1595 - Bologna, 1662)
Crucifixion with the Virgin, Saint Catherine, Saint Dominic and the Mysteries of the Rosary
Oil on canvas, 89X60 cm
Provenance:
Bologna, private collection
The canvas was traced back to Vincenzo Spisanelli's catalogue by Pietro Di Natale and Michele Danieli. The artist was born in Piedmont, but was a pupil of Denis Calvaert in Bologna and active in Ferrara, Imola, Modena, Lombardy and Marche. The work under examination can be dated to his maturity, when the author had largely emancipated himself from the stylistic features of his master between persistent late Mannerist schemes and timid leaps towards a more 'modern' and classicizing painting.
We thank Pietro Di Natale and Michele Danieli for the attribution.
