Luxury edition produced at the expense of the Duchess of Devonshire. It is decorated with 37 plates out of text, including a portrait of the Duchess, a medallion with the effigy of Virgil on the titles and vignettes in the text, engraved for the most part by W. F. Gmelin and P. Parboni. Some plates were engraved after drawings by Camuccini and Canova. They generally depict sites in modern Italy and other places made famous by Virgil's verses. This edition was printed in a small number - 164 copies according to Artaud and 230 according to Gamba, of which 150 remained in the possession of the Duchess of Devonshire. A superb copy printed on wove paper at full margins. From the library of François de Montherot (1784-1869), with a long signed autograph note on a separate leaf.
