Lot no. 110
VIRGILE. Opera. Mauri Servii Honorati grammatici in eadem commentarii, ex antiquis exemplaribus suæ integritati restituti. Paris, Robert Estienne, 1532. - VALERIANO (Giovanni Pietro). Castigationes et varietates Virgilianæ lectionis. Ibid, 1529. 2 works in a folio volume, marbled calf, double gilt fillet, numeral at the corners, spine decorated with the same repeated numeral, marbled edges (18th century binding). An important critical edition of Virgil's works, the only one by Robert Estienne. Of great typographical beauty, it is the first to use the new roman typeface, which was to mark the aesthetics of the book in the 16th century, in its three sections. Superb initials with a sifted background attributed to Geoffroy Tory.
As is often the case, the Corrections et variantes de Virgile par Valeriano in the first edition given by Robert Estienne, based on the original Roman edition of 1521, has been bound in. The title is decorated with a large full-page woodcut.
This copy is bound in the cipher of the Plessis-Sorbonne College. The ex-præmio leaf has been removed from the head of the volume.
Upper joint damaged, hinges split, light spotting, angular repair to last leaf.
