Remarkable post-incunable illustrated work from Lyon. The works of Virgil are printed in round letters, framed by commentaries and notes by Josse Bade, Servius, Donat, Beroaldo and others, typographed in smaller type. The title is printed in red and black in a fine architectural frame. The illustrations include a full-page figure of Virgil and the muse Calliope among other characters and 64 very fine woodcuts in the text, most of them mid-page, taken from Sébastien Brandt's Virgil, published in 1502 by the Strasbourg printer Johann Grüninger. Handwritten annotations from the 16th century on the verso of the title and in the margins of some leaves (partially trimmed by the binder). A copy luxuriously bound at the end of the eighteenth century. It belonged to Jérôme Delanoue, surgeon ordinary to the king, with a handwritten bookplate on the title dated 1609 in Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois; then to Robert Hull, of Norwich, with a handwritten bookplate on a flyleaf. Modern armorial bookplate with the initials G.L. First volume only, without the second containing the Aeneid. Binding a little rubbed, spine darkened, tiny worm work in the bottom of the volume, running titles trimmed in the last quire.
