Lot no. 141
VITRUVE. M. Vitruvius per Jocundum Solito castgatior factus... Venice, Joannis de Tridino alias Tacuino, May 22, 1511; in-folio of [4] ff., 110 ff., [9] ff.., contemporary binding in brown calf, boards entirely decorated in cold, with vertical compartments of cold latticework in the center, roulette alternating bee, griffin, dragon (?) and 8-petal flower on the edges, ribbed spine, vellum laces (small tears on spine and edges). Published by Fra Giocondo, a famous architect at the time, who dedicated it to Pope Julius II. It is adorned with 135 woodcut figures in the text, which Graesse (VIII, 376) finds "very curious, for example the one on p. 103 depicting an organ". Fine woodcut title frame. Annotations by a contemporary hand (erased on the title). The decorated early binding may be Venetian, but it could also have been executed in Paris, as the verso of the title bears the stamped bookplate of Jacques Thiboust, secretary to François I and later to Marguerite de Valois. - Marginal foxing at bottom of last few leaves.
