Vladimir BOROVIKOVSKI (Myrhorod, 1757 - Saint Petersburg, 1825)
Portrait of a Woman in a Blue Shawl
Oval oil on zinc
24 x 19 cm
Called to St Petersburg by Catherine II in 1787, the Ukrainian portrait painter Borovikovsky, who had trained with Dimitri Levitsky and Giovanni Lampi, was admitted to the St Petersburg Academy in 1795. The decade of 1790, during which our miniature was produced, marked the peak of the painter's career.
Our zinc should be compared with the Portrait of a Woman in the Walters Museum of Art in Baltimore (38.118), which shows the same model but has not been authenticated.
