A Ukrainian painter and graphic artist also known by the first name Volodymyr, Vladimir Makarenko, known as Makar, studied at the Dnipropetrovsk School of Fine Arts and subsequently at the Leningrad Institute of Applied Art. Associated with the non-conformist art movement, he spent time in Tallinn before settling in Paris. His work notably combines Ukrainian iconography, surrealism and abstraction, with the female figure featuring prominently. The Ralli Museums hold a significant collection of his paintings.
