VOITURE (Vincent). Les Œuvres de M. de Voiture. Paris, Veuve Maugé, 1686; 2 volumes in one vol. in-12 (154 x 92 mm), fawn calf, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt arms, arms on covers (period binding). Engraved portrait and frontispiece. A central figure at the Hôtel de Rambouillet, Voiture was its echo. His Correspondence (Volume I), mainly addressed to the Marquise and Julie, reflects the language, tone and spirit of the famous salon, crystallising an essential moment in French language and society. Volume II contains his Lettres amoureuses et de galanterie, his chansons et rondeaux and his Lettres en vieux langage, i.e. wittily imitating that of the romans de chevalerie, which Chapelain had made fashionable again. EXEMPLAIRE OF THE COMTE DE PLÉLO (Louis de Bréhan 1699-1734), GREAT LOVER OF BOOKS, SCIENCES AND LITERATURE, DIPLOMATE AND CHEVALERESQUE WARRIOR who died at the age of 35, in a heroic charge to try to liberate Dantzig besieged by 30,000 Russians.
