Volpato, Giovanni The Loggias of Raphael in the Vatican. Pilastra nº X. Circa 1775. Hand-coloured copperplate engraving on wove paper. 102 x 40 cm. Framed under passepartout and behind glass (unopened). From: 'Delle Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano', published around 1775-77 by Ludovicus Tesio Taurinensis. - In the late 18th century, the Italian engraver Giovanni Volpato was commissioned to capture the frescoes of the loggias in copperplate engravings in order to make them accessible to a wider public. His engravings are considered to be extremely precise and skilful, as they faithfully reproduce the complex ornamental details and figurative depictions. The prints contributed significantly to the dissemination and admiration of Raphael's art in Europe and made the masterpieces of the Vatican known outside Italy. Giovanni Volpato's engravings of the Vatican loggias remain to this day an important testimony to his artistic precision and his commitment to the preservation of the great masterpieces of art history. - Scattered brown stains and partially slightly wavy.
