Take a trip with the imperial couple! This extremely rare edition appears to have been published in a very limited number of copies, intended exclusively for the officers of the Emperor's household, the sovereign's private and domestic service. The work details the itinerary and programme, day by day, of the imperial couple's journey south between 23 August and 24 September 1860. It consists of alternating timetables, coloured maps and historical notes on some of the cities visited (Marseille, Algiers, etc.). Some of the plates fold out. The entire journey is presented in great detail, including the planned entertainment (balls, masses, banquets, visits, etc.). The work is enriched by a L.A.S. from the Aide-de-Camp and First Squire of Napoleon III, General Fleury, on headed paper from the Emperor's household. Dated 22 August 1860 in Saint-Cloud, it is addressed to Count Félix Bacciochi, the Emperor's First Chamberlain, and announces that this book will be sent to him ahead of the trip. Both were among the six great civil officers of the crown, occupying positions of the highest order within the Imperial Household. Binding slightly rubbed on the spine, small indentation on one cut and beginning of a split at one bit, corners a little indented. Some foxing and stains, especially at the end of the book, endpapers browned. Small marginal tear at the head of the letter, without affecting the text.
