Very rare first German edition of this important work on the development of rocket technology. - Dictionary of Scientific Biography, vol. 3, p. 388 - Cf. Poggendorf I, 472 and Braun and Ordway III, 30-34 (on the original English edition of 1814). The Englishman William Congreve (1772-1828) developed a projectile with which a large number of shots could be fired in rapid succession without strong recoil. These projectiles, which Congreve called "rockets", would later inspire F. S. Key to write the line "and the rockets red glare" in his song "The Star-Spangled Banner", which later became the American national anthem. - The plates with illustrations of operational use, transport, deployment and the various possible uses of the rockets on land and at sea. - Provenance: Title with stamps of the "Militär-Bibliothek Graudenz" and the "Provinzial Bibliothek der Artillerie II. Armee-Corps." - Some leaves with backed losses in the margins without loss of text, copy slightly foxed throughout.
