WALDOR Mélanie. Poésies du cœur. Paris, L. Janet, 1835; in-8, [4]-315-[1] pp, Second Empire binding, ivory bradel cloth, spine decorated with a cold fleuron, green parts, yellow cover. This first edition made the author's reputation. Novelist, poet and playwright Mélanie Waldor (1796-1871) ran a salon frequented by Hugo, Nerval and Musset. She had a famous affair with Alexandre Dumas, which the latter transposed in Antony, a drama performed in 1831. Woodcut frontispiece portrait of Waldor standing at night, looking out of the window at the stars. The volume contains 3 autograph pieces, one of which is unpublished: A long piece in verse (3 pp. in-8, 80 alexandrines) lamenting the three condemned to death in Buzançais, addressed to M. Hébert, procureur général de la Seine known for his implacable rigour, dated May 1847. It appears to be unpublished: "They are dead! Each of them paid with his head / The misfortune of being poor... Justice is done! A letter signed by Mélanie Waldor (1 p. in-8) addressed to the Minister, dated 15 November 1856, requesting a subscription for her collection Les Moulins en deuil. A large folded folio in-8 containing a handwritten letter in 15 verses for her one-act comedy Le Portrait, dated June 1858 (also appears to be unpublished, as does the play of which no trace has been found).
