A relaxed president, the youngest in the history of the United States. With him, renewal and modernity are taking hold in the White House. The Democrat, who narrowly defeated Richard Nixon, has been in the Oval Office for barely four months. Two issues had already shaken his administration: the Bay of Pigs disaster and the sending of Yuri Gagarin into space by the Russians. It was then that Kennedy promised the moon. Washington, May 1961.
With his dazzling smile, tanned complexion and athletic appearance, he had won over the French. On 3 June 1961, the American President, just 44 years old, responded to the cheers of Parisians at the end of a three-day visit to France, his first state visit across the Atlantic. Charles de Gaulle received John Fitzgerald Kennedy and "the gracious Mrs Kennedy", as the General put it, in a particular political context: at the height of the Cold War, France and the United States were at odds over NATO and the nuclear programme.
