Walter Harzer - A cased Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross 1939 by Klein & Quenzer
Magnetic core, silver frame stamped "800" on reverse top arm; a textbook K&Q; measuring circa 48.4 mm x 48.3 mm, weighing 30.3 g; suspension ring stamped "800" and "65"; issue case constructed of thick cardstock covered with a black leatherette paper; the interior of the lid with off-white and padded blended fabric; intact fabric hinge cover; base of case lined with black velvet separately fitted for the cross and ribbon; push button fully functional; external metal hinge fully functional; measuring approximately 145.5 mm x 78 mm. Complete with original 43.5 cm ribbon.
On Sunday 17 September 1944, the Allies launched Operation Market Garden and Harzer’s division was engaged in the Battle of Arnhem. As commander of the 9. SS-Panzer-Division "Hohenstaufen", the bridge was held at Arnhem, temporarily preventing the allies from crossing the Rhine. On 21th September 1944, SS-Obersturmbannführer and Ia (operations officer) Walter Harzer was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his actions during these battles. The award was personally presented by SS-Obergruppenführer und General der Waffen-SS Wilhelm Bittrich. These historic events were recorded in the book and movie titled "A Bridge Too Far".

Walter Harzer - Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes, Klein & Quenzer-Fertigung im Etui
Geschwärzter Eisenkern in Silberzarge, diese auf dem rs. oberen Kreuzarm punziert "800", der Sprungring punziert „800“ und „65“.
„Textbook“ Fertigung eines Klein & Quenzer Stückes. Breite 48,4 mm. Gewicht 30,3 g. Das schwarze Verleihungsetui mit Lederimitatbezug,
die Deckelinnenseite mit weißem Seidenfutter, schwarzer Samteinsatz mit Aussparungen für Kreuz und Band. Maße ca. 145,5 x 78 mm. 43,5cm langes Halsband.
Am Sonntag, dem 17. September 1944, begannen die Alliierten das Unternehmen "Market Garden", unter anderem gegen die 9. SS-Panzer-Division "Hohenstaufen" unter ihrem Kommandanten SS-Obersturmbannführer Walter Harzer. Er konnte die Brücke von Arnheim halten und verhinderte die Überquerung des Rheins durch die Alliierten. Am 21. September 1944 wurde Harzer dafür das Ritterkreuz zum Eisernen Kreuz verliehen, höchstpersönlich vom SS-Obergruppenführer und General der Waffen-SS Wilhelm Bittrich. Diese historischen Ereignisse wurden von Cornelius Ryan in einem Roman mit dem deutschen Titel "Die Brücke von Arnheim" verarbeitet, der 1977 mit großer Starbesetzung von United Artists verfilmt wurde.
