Lot no. 1986
Walter Stöhrer (1937 Stuttgart - 2000 Scholderup near Schleswig)
Untitled
Painted in a distinctly expressive, gestural style, this composition with figurative associations is dominated by black lines which, together with the broadly applied, contrasting use of colour, form a furious interplay. A representative sheet by the artist, who trained at the Karlsruhe Academy and whose oeuvre is difficult to categorise in terms of art historical genre. Although influences from the CoBrA group are noticeable, Stöhrer can confidently be described as a rebellious maverick who became one of the most influential European painters in 20th century art. He often found inspiration and stimulation in literary texts, such as those by André Breton and Rolf Dieter Brinkmann. Mixed media/arched wove paper (watermark). Verso sign. and dat. (19)97 and inscribed: "vorl. WVZ P 967.4 (/) Schrade 76 oder 16 (/) Privat". 76.4 cm x 56.5 cm.
According to kind information from Mrs Hanne Forstbauer, Walter Stöhrer-Stiftung, the work originates from the series "Irgend so ein Clown, der wie ein unbekannter Vogel fliegt" created in 1997 and is assigned the provisional catalogue raisonné no. P1997.4 of the works on paper.
Mixed media on paper. Signed and dated (19)97 on the reverse.
