He was born on October 11, 1925 in Codisotto (Reggio Emilia, Italy) and came to Vienna in 1943 as a forced labourer. After the war, he studied with Fritz Wotruba at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1946 to 1952 and was a founding member of the "Art Club", a centre for the artistic avant-garde. From 1950 onwards, Bertoni worked as a freelance artist and developed a diverse oeuvre that ranges from representational to abstract sculpture. His works can be seen in public spaces, especially in Vienna and Austria, but also internationally. In 1965 he was appointed full professor and head of the master class for sculpture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna - he held this position until his retirement in 1994. Bertoni has received several awards, including the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art. He died on December 23, 2019 in Vienna and was buried on the grounds of the open-air museum he founded in Winden am See.
