Once a sedentary community of field farmers, the Cheyenne abandoned their way of life as unspecialized hunters and field farmers, specializing entirely in the hunting of Bisons. They roamed large areas of the "great plains," a vast arid region east of the Rocky Mountains and were among the most well-known of the nomadic indigenous tribes in this region. However, this way of life came to an ending when the Cheyenne, like all the other native Americans, were forced to settle in reservations across the country. Today, the Northern Cheyenne live in southeastern Montana in the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation. Only in the 1970s, they were granted the right to practice their religion again. Since that time, the Cheyenne have rediscovered their tribal consciousness and remember their ancient customs. Specimens like this feather hood are an integral part of this long-forgotten culture. Worn during ceremonial rituals, they testify to the great merits of their owner. We are very aware of the importance of this object in the context of the culture of this community, which was strongly influenced by colonialism. Therefore, we are very proud to be able to say that this war bonnet comes from the collection of the museum Indian Land Gossau (Switzerland), which is an institution that actively engages in educating about the history and culture of Native Americans. This beautiful War Bonnet is made of Golden Eagle and Bold Eagle feathers. The quills are wrapped in red trade cloth wool fabric. Eagle fluff adorns the transition from the wool fabric to the feathers. White ermine fur pieces are attached to the feather ends. Red dyed horsehair tufts and appendages attached to both sides, as well as wool and silk ribbons complete this piece. The headband is embroidered with glass beads and sewn together with animal sinews. The white background is decorated with three colorful teepees. This kind of embroidery is called "lazy steach". A "life feather" has been placed in the center of the hood. Einst ein sesshaftes Volk von Feldbauern, gaben die Cheyenne ihre Lebensweise als unspezialisierte Jäger und Feldbauern auf und gingen vollständig zur Bisonjagd über. Sie durchstreiften grosse Gebiete der “great plains”, ein riesiges Trockengebiet östlich der Rocky Mountains und gehörten zu den bekanntesten Völkern der in diesem Gebiet nomadisierenden, indigenen Stämme. Diese Lebensweise nahm allerdings ein Ende, als die Cheyenne, wie alle anderen indigenen Bewohner Amerikas, in Reservaten zur Sesshaftigkeit gezwungen wurden. Heute leben die Nördlichen Cheyenne im Südosten des US-Bundesstaats Montana in der Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation. In den 1970er Jahren wurde ihnen das Recht auf die Ausübung ihrer Religion wieder zugestanden. Seit dieser Zeit haben die Cheyenne ihr Stammesbewusstsein wiederentdeckt und erinnern sich ihrer alten Sitten und Gebräuche. Exemplare wie diese Federhaube sind ein integraler Teil dieser lange vergessenen Kultur. Getragen bei zeremoniellen Ritualien, zeugten sie von den grossen Verdiensten ihres Trägers. Wir sind uns der Wichtigkeit dieses Objekts im Kontext der vom Kolonialismus stark geprägten Kultur dieses Volkes sehr bewusst. Desshalb sind wir umso stolzer sagen zu können, dass diese Federhaube aus der Sammlung des Museums Indian Land Gossau entstammt, dass sich aktiv für die Aufklärung der Geschichte der indigenen Völker Amerikas einsetzt. Die Haube besteht aus Golden-Eagle und Bold-Eagle Federn. Die Federkiele sind mit roten Tradecloth-Wollstoff umwickelt. Adlerflaum ziert den Übergang vom Wollstoff zu den Federn. An den Federenden sind weisse Hermelinfellstückchen angebracht. Rot gefärbte Pferdehaarbüschel und an beiden Seiten befestigte Anhängsel sowie Woll- und Seidenbänder vollenden die Kriegshaube. Das Stirnband ist mit Glasperlen bestickt und mit Tiersehnen zusammengenäht. Der weisse Untergrund ist verziert mit drei farbenfrohen Tipis. Diese Art der Bestickung wird “Lazy Steach” genannt. In der Mitte der Haube wurde eine “Lebensfeder” angebracht. In seiner ganzen Pracht ein rares Objekt mit grosser und wichtiger kultureller Geschichte. Dieses mit * (Asterisk) bezeichnete Objekte ist vollumfänglich mehrwertsteuerpflichtig, d. h. bei diesen Objekten wird die MWST auf den Zuschlagspreis plus Aufgeld berechnet.
