Kandinsky devoted his life to the utopian project of reconstructing the spiritual in the world using art. His work simultaneously embraced geometrical form, influenced by modern industry and engineering. In his words, “of all art forms, abstract painting is the most difficult, for it demands that one has an acute sensitivity for composition and for colours, and that one is a true poet.” Our work was completed at the height of Kandinsky's tenure at the Bauhaus, the innovative school of architecture, whose teachings were based on the synthesis of the theoretical and the practical. Between 1922 and 1933 Kandinsky gave classes in the mural painting studio, applying his colour theories and integrating new elements on the psychology of form. Geometric components occupied an important place in his teaching and in his painting. Kandinsky added circles, half circles, rings, angles and straight and curved lines to the Suprematist vocabulary, and composed these elements in new ways, creating his personal grammar and his own artistic handwriting. During this period Kandinsky's artistic production was prolific. He broke with the influential Constructivism and Suprematist styles of the period, rejecting the repression of feeling, emotion and intuition that he believed vital to the act of painting. His works from this period posses a new liberty, palpable in the richly coloured and layered surfaces in our painting. Working in close collaboration with Paul Klee, his Bauhaus colleague and old friend from his Blaue Reiter period, Kandinksy focused on construction inspired by the modern industrial world. His art began to adopt the analytical hard-edged geometrical forms of industry and engineering, creating paintings that were both functional and aesthetic. Our composition is dominated by an ochre toned rectangle, from which horizontal and vertical lines project from the center of the canvas. Two diagonal lines shoot out to create a sense of movement in the composition, suggesting the imagery of a wheel, or a machine at work. Despite its references to modern industry, our painting, dated 1930, possesses a delicate complexity and a harmonic relationship between form and colour. While Kandinsky's paintings were dictated by self-imposed strict rules, he believed in counterbalancing the complex principles of construction and form with a more spontaneous act of creation. Kandinksy's work evolved significantly during his last years at Dessau: A more organic aspect emerges. He renounces primary, luminous colours in favour of mixed, mat colours and gradations. While the composition has industrial influences, the earthen colour of the background, the condensed brown, lends the painting a more mystical, almost spiritual effect.
