Lot no. 99
WEIS (Jean-Martin). Representation of the festivities given by the city of Strasbourg for the convalescence of the king; on the arrival and during the stay of his majesty in this city. Paris, Aubert, 1744. In broadside, brown marbled calf, arms in the centre of the boards, spine decorated with the figure of Louis XV repeated, red edges (Binding of the period). This is a famous book of festivities, one of the most beautiful of the richest period for these productions.
It contains a large title page in a rocaille frame with trophies and coats of arms, engraved by Maryve, an equestrian portrait of King Louis XV engraved by Wille after Charles Parrocel, 11 double plates of festive scenes engraved by le Bas after drawings by Jean-Martin Weis. The 20 pages of text, also engraved, are beautifully framed and decorated with 2 vignettes.
A copy bearing the arms and cipher of Louis XV.
A label has been removed from the bottom of the title, perhaps that of Antoine-Michel Padeloup who was usually responsible for binding these luxurious publications.
A note on a flyleaf dated 1777 indicates that the volume was donated by an archivist.
Binding very worn, spine detached with missing leather, one hinge completely split, rubbing and epidermis, corners dulled.
