A fine representation of this ancient lake, which was located between the western districts of Naples and the volcanoes of the Phlegrean Fields; drained, it no longer exists today. The dog cave is the site of toxic fumes; dogs were used to protect themselves from them, as the toxic gases were heavier than air and were the first to bother animals. - Map of Switzerland, engraved on copper and watercoloured, Edinburgh, 1814. 48 x 37 cm.
