Each approx. 37 x 29 cm. Mounted by the publisher on strong card (45.6 x 56 cm). Verso each with mount. Label on verso, here with typographic inscription, numbering and further information on artist and publisher. Loosely inserted in decoratively illustrated, richly gilt and blind-stamped imp. folio OLwd. Publisher's folders (used, slightly stained, rubbed, scuffed and with small tears, but wings completely intact).

XVII, 74 f., ADB XII, 402 - First, extremely rare complete edition of this marvellous visual record of the Prussian court painter's travels, in the present completeness and in the original publisher's folders extremely rare to be found in the trade. - Showing images of the Far East, including views in Bangkok, Rangoon, Hong Kong, Macao, Peking and Singapore, views in North and South America, the Middle East and Europe. Our copy is divided into three parts with separate plate titles. 1. world tour with 34 plates. 2. new series with 20 plates and 3. Europe with 14 plates - Eduard Hildebrandt was born in Danzig in 1817. He studied under the marine painter Wilhelm Krause and Eugene Isabey in Paris and won three medals at the Paris Salon in 1843. After his return to Berlin, his talent as a landscape painter caught the eye of Alexander von Humboldt, who recommended him to the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV, whereupon he was appointed court painter and supported in his subsequent extensive travels. In the years 1844-45 he visited America and Brazil, in 1847 he travelled to England, Portugal, Spain, the Canary Islands and Madeira, in 1851 to Italy, Egypt, Palestine, Turkey and Greece and from 1862 to 1864 he undertook a world tour from Trieste via Suez to India and on to China, Japan across the Pacific and back via California and Central America. His travelogues were published by the "Berliner Montagspost" and later in book form. The original watercolours from the journey were shown in London in 1866 and in 1868, just one year before his death, in an exhibition at the Crystal Palace. - Backing boards partially somewhat foxed or dusty, mostly slightly browned in margins, corners slightly bumped in places. Overall well-preserved and extremely rare in this completeness.
