Lot no. 1914
Werner Gilles (1894 Rheydt - 1961 Essen)
View of a town in the Palatinate
View of a church with towering spires. Expressionist depiction created with large, pastel-toned, luminous areas of colour and in part with powerful contours. Gilles studied at the Weimar Bauhaus from 1921-1923 under Lyonel Feininger, whose influence can be seen in this work. In 1930, he received a scholarship for the Villa Massimo in Florence. During the National Socialist era, Gilles was one of the ostracised artists. The painting was probably created around 1947-1955 after one of his visits to the painter Rolf Müller-Landau in Heuchelheim near Landau in der Pfalz, a friend of his who was close to him artistically.
