Lot no. 68
WHELER (George). A Journey into Greece, in company of Dr Spon of Lyons. London, William Cademan, Robert Kettlewell & Awnsham Churchill, 1682. Small folio, fawn calf, spines edged with cold roulettes, five-ribbed spine, marbled edges (English binding of the period). First edition, illustrated with a large folded map of Achaia, 3 figures and 4 plates of coins out of text, and some sixty figures engraved in the text.
The account by George Wheler (1651-1724) complements that of Jacob Spon (published in Lyon in 1678), whom he had met during his Grand Tour in Venice in 1675 and in whose company he travelled through Greece and Asia Minor, taking an interest in antiquities and botany.
"The first work to attempt a systematic topographical description of Greece, it remained the standard English book on Greece for many years, although it was never reprinted" (cat. Blackmer, no. 348).
From the Everard Home library, with bookplate.
Spine rebound, corners restored, rubbing. Freckling and spotting.
