Lot no. 69
WHELER (George). Voyage de Dalmatie, de Grèce et du Levant. Amsterdam, Jean Wolters, 1689. 2 volumes in-12, fawn-coloured basane, spine decorated, gilt coat of arms in the upper case, spotted edges (Binding of the period). First French edition of this account, which complements Jacob Spon's 1678 account. It is "one of the most important accounts of travel in the Levant and the first description of Athens", according to Blackmer.
It is illustrated with a title-frontispiece, a folded map of Achaia and 92 plates of views, plans and figures of architecture, archaeology and natural history, as well as a table.
The arms on the spines of the volumes are those of the Anisson family, famous printers and booksellers from Lyon, borne at the time by Jean Anisson (1642-1721), who was director of the Imprimerie Royale du Louvre from 1691 to 1705.
From the library of the château de Saint-Jullin, Isère, with dry stamp.
Minor spotting, a few freckles and slightly browned plates, but a pleasant copy nonetheless.
Boucher de la Richarderie, II, 191 - Weber, II, 406 - Blackmer, n°1787 - Chadenat, n°1229.
