WHITE (John). Voyage à la nouvelle Galles du Sud, à Botany-bay, au Port Jackson, en 1787, 1788, 1789. Paris, Pougin, year 3; 2 parts in one volume in-8 (197 x 121 mm), fawn calf, smooth spine decorated with gilt vases, fillets on covers, int. dent. and gilt edges (Period binding). A surgeon and botanist, White was sent in 1788 to the new penal colony of Australia to establish a hospital. He travelled to Brazil, described Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, Botany Bay, Port-Jackson (Sydney), etc., studied the fauna (kangaroos, cassowaries, etc.) and plants (particularly medicinal), and described his dealings with the natives and the massacres they committed against the deportees. First edition of the French translation by Charles Pougens, who added extensive notes (256 pp.) taken from the accounts of other travellers, relating to the fauna, flora and arts practised by the Tahitians: sculpture, music, dance, poetry, etc. A very fine copy in an attractive binding. Minor worm damage to 2nd plate (approx. 5mm).
