Wilfrid Constant BEAUQUESNE (1847-1913): The death of Colonel Clicquot de Mentque, commander of the 1st Regiment of Chasseurs d'Afrique at Sedan on 1st September 1870. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1885 lower left. 65 x 81 cm. Pierced canvas to be restored. Colonel Clicquot de Mentque, commander of the 1st Regiment of Chasseurs d'Afrique, was mortally wounded during a cavalry charge at the Battle of Sedan on 1st September 1870 and died on 9th September. During this charge ordered by General Ducrot, the 1st Chasseurs d'Afrique lost two-thirds of its original strength. A student of Horace Vernet and Émile Vernet-Lecomte at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and a painter of military scenes, Wilfrid-Constant Beauquesne is best known for his paintings of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.
