Colonel Clicquot de Mentque, commander of the 1st Regiment of Chasseurs d'Afrique, was mortally wounded during a cavalry charge at the Battle of Sedan on 1st September 1870 and died on 9th September. During this charge ordered by General Ducrot, the 1st Chasseurs d'Afrique lost two-thirds of its original strength. A student of Horace Vernet and Émile Vernet-Lecomte at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and a painter of military scenes, Wilfrid-Constant Beauquesne is best known for his paintings of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.
