Lot no. 1688
Wilhelm Busch (1832 Wiedensahl - 1908 Mechtshausen)
Farmer in a red jacket with a basket or wooden tub
This painting by Busch, created around 1875, belongs to the large series of works with the very individual motif of the so-called "red jackets", a central motif for him, in which the figures wear a red jacket that is unusual for everyday peasant life. It also reflects the direct influence of Dutch-Flemish painters of the 17th century - such as Adriaen van Ostade, Adriaen Brower and David Teniers - on the artist, who was primarily known as a humorous draughtsman and poet. Busch first studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf from 1851 to 1853 and then at the Academy in Antwerp, where he was fascinated by the Old Masters in the original. Oil/thin card, mounted on strong card. Label on verso with confirmation of authenticity "I hereby confirm that the picture overleaf 'Bauer mit Krug in der volten(?)Hand' was painted by Wilhelm Busch and was in my possession after his death.
