Idyllic river landscape
Roelofs is considered an important forerunner of the Hague School. Based on Romanticism, he combined influences from the Barbizon School with those of other progressive Hague artists such as Johan Hendrik Weissenbruch. In the 1850s he travelled to Barbizon and Fontainebleau and from 1856 onwards he regularly visited the Netherlands in the summer, where he found motifs in the wetlands and polder landscapes.
