Willem Romeyn (c. 1624 Haarlem - c. 1695) attr; Landscape with a resting herd of cattle, sheep and goats Scene in front of a stable covered with thatch or straw, flanked by two pollarded willows, with a mountain in the background. Romeyn specialised in the depiction of shepherds and cattle, which he usually composed in front of imagined Italian landscapes and Roman-antique ruins. He belonged to the second generation of Dutch Italianisants, influenced by Nicolaes Berchem (1620 - 1683), with whom he studied (documented in 1642), and Karel Dujardin. In 1646 he joined the Haarlem Guild of St Luke. He lived in Rome himself in 1650/51 and then returned to Haarlem, where he was active in the painters' guild. In addition to Berchem and Dujardin, Romeyn's oeuvre contains motif and style references to Hendrik Mommers, Adriaen van der Kabel, Willem Buytewech (II) and Dirck Helmbreeker. Oil/oak panel. Old adhesive label from the 18th/19th century in French verso: "No. 45 Guill(au)me Romeyn. Paysage qui réprésente un Croupeau de Boeuf & de mouton reposant sur un Paturage devant une Chaumiere", also inscribed in black pen "VAN ROMEYN" and red wax seal with monogram "MB" in ligature. 35 cm x 41 cm. Frame. Provenance: Auction "Fine old Master Paintings", Phillips, London, 07.12.1993, lot 134. Attributed to Willem Romeyn (ca. 1624 - 1695). Oil on oak panel. Inscribed "VAN ROMEYN" on the reverse, 18th/19th century label with attribution to Willem Romeyn, no. 45 and description in French, old red wax seal with monogram "MB".
