Lot no. 1755
Willem van Mieris (1662 Leiden - 1747 ibid.) attr; "The fortune teller". Original title Narrative scene in front of a palace in a southern landscape with a mountain panorama. The old fortune teller, accompanied by a boy, eloquently reads a noble young lady's fortune. An artistically outstanding cabinet painting in its virtuoso materiality and fine painterly execution, which is presumably another version of van Mieris' "Fortune Teller" by his own hand, which is in the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden (inv. no. 1773). Another known version attributed to van Mieris is part of the collection in Milntown House on the Isle of Man. The artist Willem van Mieris was a master in the Leiden Guild from 1685 and was one of the best fine painters in his guild. His mastery lies in his refined use of light and meticulously depicted scenes, figures and materials. Oil on canvas; signed and dated on bottom centre. "W(illem). van Mieris f(eci)t An(n)o 1706". 30 cm x 24.5 cm. Provenance: From the property of an old-established East Frisian family, who in the 18th century were in administrative and legal service for the royal house of East Frisia, which ruled until 1744. Attributed to Willem van Mieris (1662 - 1747). Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1706.
