Through numerous intense discussions with the artist, Grohmann had a clear understanding of Baumeister's inspirations and references, and this also included the special importance of Paul Cézanne. At the very beginning of the introduction to his 1963 Baumeister monograph, he writes: “[…] and, above all, he loved Cézanne. For him Cézanne was the turning point of modern painting, he studied him repeatedly and, even in his later years, he associated much of what he invented on his own with him. To a certain degree, he also saw Cézanne as the teacher of the cubists, who meant more to him than the 'Blauer Reiter' and whom he never ceased to admire.” (Will Grohmann, Willi Baumeister, Leben und Werk, Cologne 1963, p. 9). Our picture provided the title, so to speak, for an entire group of works that Baumeister created between 1947 and 1951. S. 99 (Katalogband) Gemeinsam mit einigen anderen bedeutenden Arbeiten des Künstlers gehörte das Schlüsselwerk „Cézanne auf dem Weg zum Motiv“ zu Grohmanns privater Sammlung - „Für Will, herzlich“ widmete es Baumeister seinem Freund. Durch eine Vielzahl intensiver Gespräche mit dem Künstler hatte Grohmann ein klares Verständnis für die Inspirationen und Referenzen Baumeisters, darunter auch die besondere Bedeutung Paul Cézannes. Ganz zu Beginn der Einleitung seiner Baumeister-Monographie aus dem Jahr 1963 schreibt er: „[…] und er liebte über alles Cézanne. Cézanne war für ihn der Wendepunkt der neuen Malerei, er hat ihn immer wieder studiert und noch in den späteren Jahren vieles von dem, was er von sich aus erfand, auf ihn bezogen. Bis zu einem gewissen Grade war Cézanne für ihn auch der Lehrmeister der Kubisten, die ihm mehr bedeuteten als der ‚Blaue Reiter' und die zu bewundern er nie aufhörte.“ (Will Grohmann, Willi Baumeister. Leben und Werk, Köln 1963, S. 9). Unsere Arbeit ist gewissermaßen titelgebend für eine ganze Werkgruppe, die Baumeister zwischen 1947 und 1951 schuf.
