Lot no. 2142
William Adolphe Bouguereau (1825 La Rochelle - 1905 ibid.) after "Tricoteuse" or "La Tricoteuse". Original title Artistically high-quality copy (late 20th century) after the famous painting by Bouguereau from 1884. At this time, Bouguereau was at the height of his career and reputation as a successful artist in the USA and Europe, his career and his reputation. His most sought-after motifs at this time were sensitive, idyllic depictions of young, virtuous, childlike, innocent, beautiful peasant girls - counter-images to life in Paris and other cities as well as to industrialisation. The motif of the knitting peasant girl appeared as early as 1869 in Bouguereau's work "La Tricoteuse" (Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha), and he devoted himself to this theme until the late 1890s. In "La Tricoteuse" from 1884, the peasant girl is depicted in a highly naturalistic manner - her feet crossed in front of her body, she leans against the corner of a wall, knitting and gazing into the distance, lost in thought. Oil on canvas; 92.5 cm x 63 cm. Frame. Provenance: Dissolution of an important German private collection - Part II. After William Adolphe Bouguereau (1825 - 1905). Oil on canvas. Late 20th century copy after the well-known painting from 1884.
