Our drawing is preparatory to the figure of an angel in two compositions by Bouguereau, both of which have not been located. The first is a decoration from 1858, Le Jour et la Nuit for the Faubourg Saint-Honoré home of Émile Pereire (see D. Bartoli and F. C. Ross, William Bouguereau, New York, Antique collectors' club, 2010, t. 2, p. 57, cat. 1858/03, rep.). Only one drawing is known of the second, Amours combattant, based on the motif of Day and Night, painted around 1884 (ibid., p. 229, cat. 1884/15, rep.).
