Our double sketch is preparatory to two large oil paintings by Bouguereau in 1894: La Prêtresse de Bacchus (fig. 1) and a Bacchante (fig. 2), both of which are in private collections (Damien Bartoli and F. C. Ross, William Bouguereau, catalogue raisonné of his Painted Work, New York, 2010, pp. 294-295, cat. 1894/13 and 1894/4).
