Our work is a preparatory study for Alma Parens (fig. 1), exhibited at the 1883 Salon and kept in a private collection (Damien Bartoli and F. C. Ross, William Bouguereau, catalogue raisonné of his Painted Work, New York, 2010, pp. 216 - 217, cat. 1883/02). Bouguereau depicts "La Mère Nourricière" (Alma Mater): an allegory of the France of his time.
