WILLS (Alfred). "The Eagle's Nest" in the Valley of Sixt; a Summer Home along the Alps. Together with some Excursions among the Great Glaciers. London, Longman, Green, Longman & Roberts, 1860. Small in-8°, bound in full green chagrin, boards very richly decorated with gilt framing, interlacing and design; spine richly decorated with gilt title, decorated fields, beautiful gilt roulette on the counterpads, front endpapers, edges gilt. Minor rubbing (English binding of the period). First edition, VERIFIER with two maps and twelve two-tone out-of-text lithographs after drawings by Mrs Wills. A superb copy from the library of Lucy Wills (1870 - 1931), the author's daughter, with her handwritten bookplate dated 18 May 1889 on the second flyleaf. In addition to his ascents of Mont-Blanc and Mont-Rose, Alfred Wills recounts the construction of his chalet at the Cirque des Fonds in the Sixt valley, which was the subject of much controversy before becoming both a popular meeting place for mountaineers of the time and a source of income for the local population.
