An excursion into the countryside
A cheerful, subtly depicted portrayal of an illustrious company on a Sunday outing on a sunny hill. In the background on the right, the carriage stands ready, while in the centre a gentleman draws the attention of his companion to the picturesque silhouette of the town in the distance. Moralt's characteristic, romantic, Biedermeier subject, which he created in numerous variations and which enjoyed great popularity with the contemporary public. Moralt learnt from his father Paul Moralt, a pupil of Spitzweg and Christian Morgenstern; he also inherited several sketchbooks and preparatory drawings by Spitzweg. From 1903 Moralt studied at the Munich Academy under Karl Raupp and soon exhibited successfully at the Munich Glaspalast. Oil/wood panel. Signed lower right with location Munich. 21 cm x 42.1 cm.
