In-folio, ivory vellum, cold-stamped decoration consisting of a framed frieze, large spandrels and a central medallion, spine decorated with cold fleurons, edges gilt, chased and painted with scrolls and acanthus leaves, wrought metal clasps (18th century Germanic binding). First edition of this vast history of the Church by Johann Wolf (1537-1600), a jurist, diplomat and historian born in Bergzabern in the Rhine Palatinate. This first part is devoted to the first fifteen centuries of our era; a second part dealing with the sixteenth century and an index by Linsius appeared eight years later. The work is illustrated with numerous woodcuts in the text, including a rich title frame by Jakob Lederlein, a portrait of the author on the verso and a suite of religious costumes by Jost Amman. Remarkable Germanic binding in stamped vellum with oriental decoration, decorated with two ornate clasps depicting Aaron and Moses (monogrammed and dated on the inside: JVB / A° 1793). The edges are decorated with an elegant motif of chased foliage and acanthus leaves painted in gilt. From the library of Paul Chapuy, a mining engineer, with a stamp on the flyleaf.
