Born in Loschwitz near Dresden in 1894, Gert Wollheim was already living in an artists' commune in 1919 and, together with Ulfert Lüken and Otto Pankok, planned the founding of an artists' colony. In 1925, Wollheim was a member of the November Group in Berlin. During the National Socialist era, Wollheim's art was categorised as degenerate, as a result of which some of his works were removed from public collections and in some cases destroyed. - Our work, The Apocalyptic Rider, was shown in the Emil Richter Art Salon, which had a major influence on Dresden's cultural life at the turn of the century and in the early 20th century, but was closed in 1930. Wollheim's apocalyptic horseman, who is shown riding through a tangle of shadowy figures through the darkness, is illuminated by the glowing red horizon, against which the image of destruction is only silhouetted. In Expressionism in particular, the apocalyptic horseman embodies the feeling of chaos and the existential fear of man in a time characterised by war and crisis. Oil and tempera on cardboard.
