Little is known about the cultural context of these figures known as ‘moai kavakava’ (literally: image with ribs). According to Michel and Catherine Orliac, the figures represent deceased ancestors ‘in the process of changing towards an immaterial state’ (see: Michel and Catherine Orliac, Treasures of Easter Island, Paris 2008, pp. 104-106). The figures were used during fertility rites and harvest celebrations. When not in use, they were wrapped in cloth and stored away but may also have been used in domestic worship and served a therapeutic purpose (ibid. p. 120). The figures are all similar in form but can be distinguished by the carvings adorning the top of the head, which ‘could be the distinctive sign of a particular lineage, guild, or indeed some other form of social life’ (ibid. p.113). Their female counterpart is called ‘moai paepae’.
