Wrought iron scissor lectern. Gothic. 15th century. The upper part, joined together by three sections of chains that serve, in turn, as a support for the book, has two rectangular cartouches with Gothic writing pierced ito them. The upper one is topped by fleurs-de-lys (four of them are not preserved). In them, we read 'VERBUM CARO FACTUM EST ET HABITAVIT IN NO[BIS]', referring to the Gospel of John 1:14, 'And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us'. Interestingly, lack of space means that the last word was left incomplete, missing the last three letters 'BIS'. Four fourteen-sided polyhedrons embellish the corners. The rear foot has an interior trilobed decoration topped by three fleurs-de-lys, while the front foot does not retain the complete decoration, so there is only one lobe topped with two fleurs-de-lis. This lectern was probably forged in the same workshop as the example kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, under inventory number 5158, a gift from the Silberman Galleries in 1950, as it has undeniable stylistic similarities. Identical in structure, it scissors open and closed, topped with the same type of polyhedral figures, of which only two have been preserved. The decoration of the foot also follows the same lines, this one being somewhat more ornate that of the MET version. In our opinion, however, the lectern that we have here would have been from an earlier time. This type of lectern is a rarity, since very few examples have survived, and its state of preservation is also outstanding. 150 x 57 x 44 cm.
