WUMA Mbambila Ndombasi (Kinshasa (DRC), 1943) (Untitled) Embracing couple Bronze sculpture. 11 x 18 cm without base. Signed. Trained at the Kinshasa Academy of Fine Arts, Wuma quickly established himself as one of the leading Congolese sculptors of his generation. He then worked at the University of Kinshasa as a sculptor-decorator, developing a body of work that oscillates between stylised realism and abstraction, drawing inspiration from traditional Zande, Tchokwe and Kongo sculpture. A master of bronze and other noble materials, he has created iconic public works such as La Pleureuse, La Baigneuse and monumental mosaics. Recognised alongside Liyolo and Tamba, Wuma is considered a key figure in modern sculpture in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
